Introduction

The United States is a very large country made of 50 states. It offers a wide variety of cultures and landscapes that are all worth visiting. But where to begin? What should you visit in America? Well there is no wrong or right answer to this question. There are many cities with different identities, and it will be up to you to see which one you prefer to visit based on your interest.

The Big Four

We do not believe that there is an official term for that, but “The Big Four” is the name we chose to designate what appear to be the four most popular cities for tourists.

Los Angeles, CA

Los Angeles is the second most populated city in the U.S. (behind NY) and one of the most popular cities in the world. For the most part, the popularity of Los Angeles comes from it being the birthplace of Hollywood and thus a city that appeared in many movies. Additionally, the city is also very popular for its beaches and activities. Some areas of Los Angeles also welcome some of the world’s most known theme parks such as Universal and Disneyland. It is a must for any first timer and a good gateway to the American west.

Our (subjective) Takeways

Pros: Los Angeles offers a great variety of activities, and nice weather year round – although the summer can be hot. Some areas are enjoyable, and overall the city is accessible to everyone.

Cons: The traffic in Los Angeles is awful (but not the worst in the southwest). The lack of good transit systems does not help with that. Some places in the city like downtown feel unsafe, and others are dirty.

Miami, FL

Miami is the second most populated city of the state of Florida, and well known for its beautiful beaches, colorful life and nightlife. The city is highly influenced by the surrounding cultures and its Spanish past. This rich blend gives it a unique identity. Miami is also well known for its art museums and events such as the Formula Grand Prix taking place in the city each year. It may not be the most family friendly destination, but it does not mean that it is a bad one. Perhaps you will be charmed by the tropical climate and unique personality of the place.

Our (subjective) Takeways

Pros: The city is dynamic, and the beaches are nice. Moreover, the lush and tropical environment is pleasant.

Cons: Public transit is limited, and the type of activities offered reduced.

New York City, NY

The Big Apple is often the first city visited by many foreigners. It is well known for its forest of skyscrapers and its apparitions in entertainment. New York has a rich history that reflects across the city and makes it feel alive. Life in New York is fast paced and every minute counts. And all these ingredients result in a city rich in things to see and do. Not everyone will like it, but if you can, you should try it.

Our (subjective) Takeways

Pros: As mentioned, the city is rich culturally and this results in many interesting things to see throughout the streets of New York. The transit systems in New York are also very convenient, allowing visitors to go nearly everywhere.

Cons: The noise, high rise building and fast pace can sometimes feel overwhelming. The density of people also requires extra caution for parents traveling with children. Additionally, there are some neighborhoods to avoid for safety reasons. Finally, like every big city, there are dirty areas.

San Francisco, CA

Back to California, San Francisco shows the variety of cities that exist across this state. San Francisco is a coastal city known for its history, its role in the tech industry (right next to the silicon valley) and the Golden Gate Bridge. San Francisco has the advantage of being close to nature. With a drive of less than two hours you can get either to national seashores, valley of wineries or forests of redwoods. Within the city, many activities are free and easily accessible via the very good transit system of the city. Finally, the city has a rich mix of cultures that you can explore throughout the different neighborhoods.

Our (subjective) Takeways

Pros: The transit system is incredibly convenient to move around the city. Many of the activities are free, and in the summer there really is a good mood coming out of it.

Cons: Weather and safety. San Francisco is known to be foggy, windy and cold during some part of the year. Additionally, some areas of San Francisco are best to avoid for safety reasons, and we recommend you to avoid walking alone at nights in the streets.

Other Major Cities

Now, let’s mention a couple of great cities to visit that are often less popular.

Seattle, WA

The Emerald city is often unknown to foreigners, but it is another big destination of the American west. The city is known for its aerospace industry, ecological efforts and the coffee industry. Seattle also occupies a central position between three national parks that can each be accessed in less than a two hour drive.

Chicago, IL

Wind City shares many common characteristics with New York. They both have skyscrapers, among the biggest populations of the country, and a wide cultural background. Chicago is one of the big American cities and features museums, parks and many other activities. Beyond the harsh winter of Illinois, you may actually be surprised to discover a vibrant and interesting city.

Honolulu, HI

A lot of foreigners tend to forget that Hawaii is an American state. But if you are ready to make the long trip to the archipelago, you won’t regret it. Honolulu is the capital of the state and its most populated as well. It is a beautiful beachfront city with plenty of activities in and out of the city. Moreover, the Hawaiian will know how to welcome you.

Orlando, FL

Orlando is often in the top five of the most visited cities within the United States. One thing that helps a lot are the numerous theme parks of the area. Orlando houses the famous Disneyworld, Universal Epic Universe, Seaworld and more.

Of course, there are many other cities we could be talking about, but we cannot mention them all. If you would like to know more, you can check this page with all the city we talk about on Northern Latitudes.
