The Golden Gate Bridge History in Brief
The history of the Golden Gate Bridge takes its roots in the early 1900s. At the time, there was no way to connect the northern and southern part of the Golden Gate Straight. The only choice for inhabitants was to ride a ferry to reach the northern shores of the bay. The ride took approximately 20min.
Although the idea of a bridge was popular, most engineers felt that building the bridge wasn’t possible because of the natural conditions of the strait (tides, wind ,depth, etc…) A bridge proposal was made and began to take hold, but many deemed it too expensive. That’s when engineer Joseph Strauss came in, stating that the bridge was feasible for significantly less than the initial estimated cost (Source: PBS American Experience).

It took some years for the project to be approved and launched. Many opposed the construction of the bridge for reasons going from financial interests to fears of obstruction of the strait. In 1923, an act was passed and the project was approved and financed. Construction began in 1933 and completion was achieved in 1937 — ahead of schedule.
Through the years, the bridge became a symbol of the American West. Between 2025 and 2026, over 17million vehicles had crossed the bridge.

South Vs. North
The main area to see the bridge is the welcome center / Plaza in the south. That’s where you will find the visitor center, Fort Point, and the access to walk on the bridge. It’s the most popular area, and the most easy to access.
The northern part of the bridge is generally less crowded and offers views of both the bridge and city. There’s less conveniences there, but it’s a much calmer place to view the bridge. The North Vista Point and Battery Spencer are the two main viewpoints in the north.
This article focuses mainly on the southern portion of the bridge where the welcome center is located.

How to get to the Golden Gate Bridge?
The two main ways to get to the bridge plaza/welcome center are 1) the Bus, and 2) your own vehicle. Public transportation is the best option in our opinion.
Parking
You can find multiple paid parking lots around the Plaza / Welcome Center. Those have limited spots and get easily filled. If you can get a spot right away, that’s great! But for most visitors it will be a battle that can take a long time. Below are all the information for some of the parkings around the Golden Gate Bridge Welcome Center.
The most convenient way to get to the Golden Gate Bridge Plaza is by taking the Muni bus. As of 2026, the only line that gets there is the 28. You can find more information about San Francisco public transportation in the article we made.
-
Southeast Side Visitor Parking Lot - $5.00/Hour with maximum of 3 hours.
-
Fort Point Parking - Free, but requires to walk the steep path to the bridge plaza. Get filled very quickly.
-
Crissy Field Parkings- Rates around $2.50 - $3.00/Hour, or $12.50 - $15.00/Day. Located 15-20min away from the bridge welcome center on foot. Steep ascent to the bridge plaza.
Public Transit
Be careful when boarding the bus. Some buses will go south toward the Golden Gate Park while others will go back toward the Fisherman’s Wharf. We made that mistake, and lost a significant amount of time getting back where we wanted.
Cost of Visiting the Golden Gate Bridge
